Out of the city and into the countryside – there’s a short incline at the beginning before you gently cycle between farmsteads and field orchards while enjoying the magnificent views. Nature would be empty without fruit trees – when in blossom they shape the landscape as oversized flowering plants; at harvest time the fruits are used to make cider that is often served as part of a hearty “Brettljause”. The locals don’t consider the term “cider head” to mean something negative. The characteristic drink is of course also served here; halfway along the route it’s worth stopping in Großmengersdorf to sample some cider and get enough energy for climbing up the Haselbachsenke. The Aumühle in the Sulzbach valley is reminiscent of earlier times with small mills along lively streams. Almost all these mills had to give way to industrial production … but cider remained!
