Castle tour around Klagenfurt am Wörthersee
A ring of numerous castles surrounds the provincial capital in the south of Austria. Discover some of them on this tour ... on a cycle tour through the picturesque north-west of Klagenfurt.
Starting in the centre of Klagenfurt, this route leads along the Glan Cycle Path to Mageregg Castle with its wildlife park. The route continues to Lendorf, past the Seltenheim golf course and the castle of the same name. A steep climb takes you past Hallegg Castle and the Hallegg ponds to the shores of Lake Wörthersee. From there, you cycle along the lake and then along the Lend Canal back to the city centre.
Roadbook
The route starts at Neuer Platz directly in front of the tourist information centre, via Ursulinengasse past the Landhaushof with the Wappensaal and the Klagenfurt City Theatre.
From here, take Radetzkystraße and turn right into Lerchenfeldstraße, later Aichelburg-Labia-Straße. Then head east along Oberlercherstraße into Jahnstraße. Follow this into Gutenbergstraße and pass the grounds of the state hospital to the Glanradweg cycle path. Cycle west along the Glanradweg to Mantschehofgasse and turn into Feschnigstraße, which leads to Ehrenhausen Castle.
Along Druckerweg and Magereggerstraße, you cross the Glan bridge to Mageregg Castle. You then pass the subway of the Kärntner-Bundesstraße towards Feldkirchnerstraße to Lendorf. The trail now leads westwards along Seltenheimer Straße, past the Seltenheim golf course and the castle of the same name.
The route continues along Hallegger Straße, past Tultschnig and then along a short winding road up to Hallegg Castle. Continue along Hallegger Straße past the Hallegg ponds until you reach the start of Krumpendorf. The route continues over the railway crossing at Kropfitschbad and eastwards along Lake Wörthersee to Klagenfurt Ostbucht.
Here you can take a detour to Maria Loretto Castle on the peninsula of the same name. The route leads past the Klagenfurt lido to the Lend Canal - from there you cycle a little further westwards - Maria Loretto Castle is located at the end of the Loretto Trail. Follow the Lendkanal eastwards for around 4 km until you reach the Evangelical Church of St John directly in the Lendhafen harbour. Via Villacher Ring and Stauderplatz you return to the city centre.
