Council cycle path
A leisurely cycle tour from St.Gallen over green hills, through relaxing meadows and woodland, past pretty orchards and down to Kreuzlingen on Lake Constance.
The old Konstanzer-Strasse symbolises the eventful relationship between the two cities of St.Gallen and Constance. During the Council of 1414-1418, traffic between the cities increased significantly. The cloth makers of Constance had their products made in the cheap country of St.Gallen and the local trade supplied the booming city of Constance
The route starts in the monastery district of St.Gallen, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It uses a busy main road to Wittenbach and then slowly enters the green landscape of the chain of hills between Lake Constance and the Sittertobel. Past the little white castle of Dottenwil, past the shaggy highland cattle of Ruggisberg to Hagenwil Castle, a well-preserved moated castle with a drawbridge. Amriswil only became larger than the surrounding hamlets after the opening of the Thurtal railway line.
The hinterland belongs to the individualists, who can relax among orchards, meadows and woodland. Apple and pear trees dominate the landscape in "Mostindien", while an educational trail in Altnau explains fruit growing in Thurgau. The view of Lake Constance is marvellous, the route approaches Kreuzlingen and after crossing an invisible border it ends up in the German Lake Constance metropolis of Constance.
