Kolovrat, on the panoramic road with a view of the Soca Valley

The road that runs along the ridge of Kolovrat is a panoramic road and offers beautiful views of the Soca Valley and the Julian Alps. Its special value is the open-air museum, which is well worth a visit.

Experience

From Kobarid we drive to Idrsko (in the direction of Tolmin) and at a signposted cross we turn into a 5 km long ascent to Livk. From Livk to Livške Ravne, another 3 km climb awaits us on a slightly worse tarmac road. Follow the signposts to Kolovrat. From Livške Ravne, the tarmac road runs along the edge of Kolovrat and really justifies the name "panoramic road".

We cycle past the open-air museum, where it is worth following the paths that connect many trenches and tunnels from the First World War. From a vantage point above the museum, there are marvellous views of the Soca Valley on one side and the area of the Venetian Slovenia on the other side of the ridge. It is worth savouring these views.

This is followed by a descent to the Solarji saddle and on to the village of Volče. Here we decide which side of the river we want to cycle along. The road on the left bank of the Soca is less busy. In the centre of Tolmin, we follow the signposts leading us towards Kobarid. We cycle through the villages to the Napoleon Bridge over the Soca and continue our journey to the starting point.

Roadbook

We drive along the Kobarid - Tolmin regional road and turn right in the village of Idrsko towards Livk. In Livk, turn left towards Livške Ravne and the Kolovrat open-air museum. The road climbs more or less (about 8 kilometres). On Kolovrat we cycle along a panoramic road (asphalted) with marvellous views of the Soca Valley and the peaks of the Julian Alps. The road descends from the open-air museum to the Solarji saddle and from the saddle to Volče.

In Volče you have two options:

- cycle along the busy Tolmin - Kobarid regional road,

- continue cycling to Tolmin and continue on a less busy road Tolmin - Kobarid (left bank of the Soca) through several smaller villages to the Napoleon Bridge over the Soca before Kobarid.
