Lake Constance and the Rhine delta
Varied cycle tour from St.Gallen through the Rhine Valley to Altstätten. The route leads from the Abbey District over the Goldach Viaduct to Lake Constance, through the idyllic Rhine delta with its alluvial forests, water buffalo and bird species - and on along the Old Rhine to the St.Gallen Rhine Valley.
Where does the Rhine actually flow into Lake Constance? This tour from St.Gallen offers you an answer to this question and much more besides. You start in the abbey district in St.Gallen, very close to the imposing baroque cathedral. The town briefly serves as a marvellous backdrop, and the route now heads directly towards Lake Constance.
Shortly before you get there, you pass another eye-catcher: the Goldach Viaduct with its imposing arches. You reach Lake Constance in Rorschach and cycle close to the shore for a while with a view of the vast blue. As soon as you leave Lake Constance, you have the Old Rhine right next to you.
Now you cycle through the Rhine delta - a nature reserve with alluvial forests, wet meadows and litter meadows as well as numerous birds. Some water buffalo also graze in the delta. At Fussach you reach Lake Constance again and this time the Rhine. With the river on your left, you head inland. At St. Margrethen you can make a detour to the Bruggerhorn lido. In Altstätten you finally take a train back to St.Gallen.
