Salzburg - Anthering via the back door

The tour to Anthering is a nice little loop in the north of the city of Salzburg. You usually cycle along the Salzach to Anthering: nice and flat, but a bit boring. We save that for the return journey. The alternative, however, leads behind Lengfelden up the Voggenberg on side roads and past the Ragginger See lake down to Anthering.

Roadbook

The tour starts on the Salzach cycle path at the northern thermal power station. From here, follow the signs for the Mozart cycle path and cycle eastwards along the Alterbach stream. After the subway at the end of Vogelweiderstraße, you leave the Alterbach and continue for a good 200 metres on the cycle path along the main road in a north-easterly direction. At the first road on the left (dead end), follow the signpost towards Kasern. Here pedestrians and cyclists can cross the Westbahn railway tracks on a subway and come out at the McDonald's in Kasern.

Continue north on Carl-Zuckmayer-Straße under the Westautobahn motorway until you turn left onto the old Mattseer Straße. Follow this road through the industrial area in a north-westerly direction until it joins a cycle path that runs alongside the Lamprechtshausener or Mattseer Landesstraße to Lengfelden.

After crossing the Fischach, turn right onto Maria-Sorg-Straße. This is where the more beautiful part of the cycle tour to Anthering begins: cycle along the Fischach valley on the narrow road heading north-west. After passing the Maria Sorg mission house, a former paper mill from the 16th century, you cycle back up to the Mattseer Landesstraße. After 50 metres, cross the road via a subway and continue north-west along Viehausener Straße and Hainachweg.

The route continues through the forest on a natural road up the Hainachgraben to the small hamlet of Hainach, from where you have a first view of the Heuberg and Gaisberg. From here, continue northwards on Hainachstraße until you reach the junction with Voggenbergstraße. Here, turn left following the signpost "Sternwarte Voggenberg" and drive up to Winding. At the Windinggut inn, turn right and descend to Lake Ragginger See, which is used for fish farming. Continue along the Winding road to the next moorland lake, the smaller Luginger See. The nature reserve is home to one of the largest populations of tree frogs in the province of Salzburg.

After the lake, turn right and head north-west until you reach the Salzkammergut cycle path. Follow the mountain road to the left and take a few bends before descending quickly to Anthering. In the village, turn right onto the old country road and cycle past the parish church, where you keep left towards Oberndorf and after another 100 metres turn left onto the Auweg. This leads under the Lamprechthausen main road in a south-westerly direction to the local railway stop and on through the meadow to the Salzach. After crossing a fence, cycle upstream along the Tauern cycle path back to the starting point at the northern thermal power station in Salzburg.
