Themed tour: Castles tour
Tittmoning - Leitgering - Asten - Pirach - Marienberg - Raitenhaslach - Moosbrunn - Burghausen
The Salzach has marked the border between Bavaria and Austria since 1816: the tour follows its course from south to north and leads from Tittmoning to Burghausen. In Tittmoning, the castle and museum built in 1234 - once the summer residence of the Salzburg prince archbishops - and the town square in the Inn-Salzach architectural style bear witness to the town's great past. On the way to Burghausen, the former residence of the Wittelsbach dynasty, you pass a number of baroque churches. The 1,051 metre long Burghausen Castle is the longest in the world and an incomparable sight. Be sure to visit the castle and museum, as well as the oldest hammer mill in Europe: The dukes used to have their weapons forged here.
Extension to the circular tour: To get back to the starting point in Tittmoning from Burghausen, we recommend the Burghausen - Tittmoning section of the Tauern Cycle Path on the Austrian side of the Salzach as a supplement to the castle tour. The route is signposted throughout.
From the Austrian side of the old Salzach bridge in Burghausen, the route first heads south along the Salzach until it turns from the riverside path into Austraße towards Holzgassen. Continue along the Hadmarkter Bezirksstraße through the forest to Hadermarkt and Schwaig and finally back across the Salzach to Tittmoning.
Difficulty of the Tauern Cycle Path section from Burghausen to Tittmoning: 16.4 km / 160 metres in altitude
TIP: The Wöhrsee lake and the "Street of Fame" in Burghausen's old town centre.
