Roadbook
Let your feelings run wild
"Fresh wild garlic, wild garlicfresh from the Murauen" shouts a stallholder on the main square in Bad Radkersburg. This plant, popularly known as "wild spinach", should not be the only thing to awaken your feelings on the pleasure tour. The wild garlic covers the ground of the meadow landscape in a lush green natural carpet and gives off the unmistakable scent of garlic in spring. If you want to discover a typical flat Mura landscape in Austria and Slovenia, this is the tour for you. You cross an area of 11,000 hectares, which is the second largest closed floodplain area in Austria. When you enter the floodplain, you feel as if you are in a strange world: a jungle-like thicket of poplars, English oaks and acacias, with many climbing plants such as hops, clematis and ivy.
There is an immense wealth of species here. The woodpeckers alone are represented by seven species. The reason for this species richness is the occurrence of many marginal biotopes as transitional habitats.
Typical of the Mur floodplains are the Lahnen, former oxbow lakes of the Mur. They are among the most valuable habitats of all and are home to many rare plants and animals such as cormorants, black woodpeckers, rooks and robins. The nature reflection area starts right in Bad Radkersburg. The sight of the dense vegetation and the diversity of living creatures is overwhelming. The first stop at Liebmann Lake is an experience. The swans cross the lake majestically and the children can hardly keep up with feeding them. An insider tip in Dietzen is the Bäcksteffl Beetle Bean Cabinet.
Simply feel, simply live.
Passing the Madlhof community chapel, you reach the suspension bridge, which takes you directly to Slovenia - gentle vibrations accompany your crossing. You cycle on via Apace and cross the Pannonian forest in Apasko Polje. Thick oaks and metre-high ant hills bring the long-forgotten Indian game from childhood back to life. The well-known winegrower Steyer Vina in Plitvica will be happy to explain the baptised vineyard with over 128 different grape varieties. Passing behind the Schlossberg, on which Oberradkersburg Castle is enthroned, you cross the bridge over the River Mur and end your tour in Bad Radkersburg with the relaxing Parktherme spa. The well-tempered thermal water washes over your body, revitalising you and giving you a sense of calm and serenity. It does you good. And makes you want more cycling experiences.
