The Danube cycle path from Passau via Vienna to Bratislava

The Danube cycle path through Vienna is particularly popular with beginners and leisurely cyclists. The metres in altitude to be climbed are limited. This makes the Danube Cycle Path an ideal route for a cycling holiday in Austria, even with children. Individual sections of the cycle path are also perfect for a cycling holiday.

This popular cycle tour starts in the beautiful 3-river city of Passau in Bavaria, where the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers meet. A "must-see" in this charming episcopal city is the 13th century fortress - as well as the baroque old town and the impressive St Stephen's Cathedral with its characteristic onion domes. The Danube cycle path from Passau via Vienna to Bratislava combines unique facets with the flair of the big city.

The Danube cycle path through Austria continues at a leisurely pace along the flat Danube valley to Engelhartszell with Austria's only Trappist monastery. Now you cycle past beautiful forests and flowering wild meadows downstream through the tranquil Donauleiten nature reserve with the imposing Schlögener Schlinge. The Danube changes course twice here. Now you pass through the Mühlviertel region, past Schach, Feldkirchen an der Donau and Ottensheim Castle, before the Danube cycle path takes you to the cultural capital of Linz. Conquer the historic old town and visit one of the lively trendy pubs! Or would you prefer a visit to the Ars Electronica Centre? Here you can also switch to a cycle tour through Upper Austria. There are also many other exciting things waiting for you along the Danube Cycle Path through Vienna.

The Danube Cycle Path now takes you to Enns, the oldest town in Austria, and to the baroque town of Grein, the pearl of the Strudengau region. Past Ybbs, the important pilgrimage church of Maria Taferl and the majestic Melk Abbey tower high above the Danube - the gateway to the Wachau UNESCO World Heritage Site: gentle wine-growing terraces and enchanting villages such as Spitz.

Your cycle tour continues to the 1,000-year-old town of Krems and past Göttweig Abbey through the fertile Tullnerfeld region to the Danube metropolis of Vienna. As the Danube Cycle Path runs directly through Vienna, it would be a shame to miss out on this cosmopolitan city. Plunge into the cultural scene, have fun in the Prater or stroll through the charismatic city centre!

Continue through the delightful Marchfeld region with its magnificent castles and the Donau-Auen National Park to your destination - the colourful and lively city of Bratislava in Slovakia.
