Three countries in one go: that’s the promise of this cycle tour along the old Parenzana railway route from Italy via Slovenia to Croatia. Along the Adriatic Sea to the spa town of Piran and with a detour through the Croatian hinterland to Porec.
In three stages, you immerse yourself in the history of the most important port of Austria-Hungary in Trieste and follow the former railway line towards Slovenia. Here you can discover other well-preserved buildings from the monarchy. At the end, the old town centre of Porec welcomes you with open arms and meditative views of the Adriatic Sea.
The route: Trieste – Piran / Portorož – Poreč
The three-country tour starts in the northern Italian harbour city of Trieste. From the railway station built in 1906, which still reflects the typical architecture of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, the route follows in the footsteps of the Parenzana. The 123 km long, narrow-gauge railway line was in operation until 1935 and is now a multinational cycle route that takes us to neighbouring Slovenia in no time at all.
You cycle inland via the spa town of Piran, past the disused geometric salt pans of Sečovlje to Livade – known for its truffles and as a lively trading centre for wine and olive oil. The last stage of the three-country cycle tour leads through 19th century tunnels and viaducts back towards the Adriatic. You will pass wide fields, lush vineyards and red earth. The destination in Istria – Poreč – and its enchanting old town centre with the UNESCO World Heritage Site Euphrasian Basilica is already within reach.
