Baroque tour

This fascinating journey back in time to the heyday of the Baroque period begins in Straßwalchen. It was here that the young Meinrad Guggenbichler worked on the high altar of the parish church, laying the foundations for a decades-long career in which he had a decisive influence on Baroque wooden sculpture in the region.

The route continues to Irrsdorf, where you can admire two Baroque carved altars and the second largest high altar in the Flachgau region in the pilgrimage church. The route then continues via Steindorf and Köstendorf to the deanery church, which underwent a magnificent Baroque remodelling in the first half of the 18th century.

The tour continues to Schleedorf and via the idyllic Egelsee lakes to the Mattsee collegiate monastery. The collegiate church, whose church tower is the highest in the region, was also richly decorated in Baroque style at the beginning of the 18th century.

The route continues via Fraham, Perwang, Berndorf and Feichten to Lauterbach and Vorau in the Oichtental valley. The Gasthaus Neuwirt in Berndorf is a good place to stop for refreshments, where you can take a relaxing break in the cosy guest garden. The route then continues via Lamprechtshausen back to Michaelbeuern, where the Benedictine monastery with the magnificent Guggenbichler high altar and the painting by J. M. Rottmayr is a particular highlight.

A late masterpiece by Guggenbichler is the altar of the plague chapel in Palting. A visit to the parish church in Lochen, the interior of which was designed entirely by Guggenbichler, forms the atmospheric conclusion to the tour before returning to the starting point in Straßwalchen via Lengau.
