The Inn-Salzach ArchitekTour runs 85 kilometres from Wasserburg am Inn to Burghausen an der Salzach. Depending on your bike and fitness level, this tour can be completed in one or two day stages. The varied themed tour leads from castle to castle through seven special Inn-Salzach towns. In between, there are stately churches and castles, magnificent monasteries and plenty of Bavarian Alpine foothills to marvel at. Many cosy beer gardens along the way make for a perfect cultural experience.
Roadbook
A pearl of the Inn - Wasserburg - is the starting point of this "Inn-Salzach ArchitekTour". Situated on a peninsula of the Inn, the Inn-Salzach town is just one example of the unique architectural style of Inn-Salzach architecture. The route leads over hilly moraine land, characterised by the last ice age, close to the Inn and past the baroque monasteries of Gars am Inn and Au am Inn. The route continues to Kraiburg. Visible from afar, Kraiburg's landmark, the Schlossberg with its small chapel of St George, rises above the town. The Mediterranean market square in the Inn-Salzach architectural style is criss-crossed by many small alleyways. There are several places to stop for refreshments around the beautiful fountain. On the way, the bathing pond in Oberflossing invites you to take a refreshing dip. The themed tour continues to the old trading town of Mühldorf a. Inn with the longest Inn-Salzach town square in Upper Bavaria. Many shops in the arcades of the old town, cosy beer gardens, restaurants and street cafés invite you to stroll and linger. If you like, you can take one of the last Inn ferries across the river between Easter and All Saints' Day or continue over the large Inn bridge towards Polling. Shortly afterwards, you will reach the small Inn-Salzach town of Tüßling. Here you will find the stately castle of Stephanie Countess Brueges von Pfuel, which is also open to guests several times a year for concerts, garden days and other exhibitions. Via the pilgrimage town of Altötting with its baroque chapel square and the world-famous Black Madonna, the tour continues to Neuötting, whose town square is dominated by the imposing parish church of St Nicholas, also known as the "Cathedral of the Inn Valley". The route continues through the shady Öttinger Forst forest to Emmerting and Mehring. The destination of the tour, the listed historic centre of Burghausen at the foot of the longest castle in the world, is a prime example of classic Inn-Salzach architecture, which accompanies cyclists along the entire route.
