Zuckmayer Route

In 1926, the German writer and playwright Carl Zuckmayer acquired the Wiesmühl' in Henndorf. After the National Socialist seizure of power in Germany, he moved the centre of his life to exile in Austria in the early 1930s.

The 'Landhaus Wiesmühl' quickly developed into a lively meeting place for the art and literature scene. Carl Zuckmayer received numerous friends and companions here, including Stefan Zweig, Ödön von Horváth, Max Reinhardt, Emil Jannings, Franz Werfel and Gerhart Hauptmann. In his memoirs "Als wär's ein Stück von mir", Zuckmayer described this time in retrospect as his paradise. Some of his most famous works were also written in Henndorf, including "Der Schinderhannes" and "Der Hauptmann von Köpenick".

After starting the tour in Henndorf, the route leads via Oelling to Sighartstein, past a small pond and on to Pfongau and Wertheim. The route then continues via Steinbach and Aubach to the Lichtentann farm. Through sparse forests and via Altentann, you finally return to the starting point in Henndorf.

Not far from Zuckmayer's beloved Wiesmühle is the Stelzhamer Stube - the ideal stopover for traditional specialities!
