Four countries, 510 kilometers, from the Dolomites to the vast landscapes of Pannonia – this is the diverse natural and cultural experience of the Drauradweg. It connects the source of the Drau in South Tyrol with its confluence with the Mur in Croatia. In Austria, the 5-star quality route certified by the ADFC stretches over 300 km through idyllic landscapes. Thanks to its flat terrain, perfect signage, and excellent infrastructure, the route is ideal for families and leisure cyclists.
Side Trips along the Drauradweg
Since 2024, eight day tours, known as “side trips,” invite cyclists to explore the surroundings of the Drauradweg even more intensively. These varied routes inspire travelers to stay an extra night at certain stopovers and discover the regions beyond the Drauradweg. The tours lead to the surrounding Carinthian lakes, such as Lake Millstatt and Lake Wörthersee, to East Tyrol, and even across the border to Italy and Lavamünd on the Slovenian border. All just a “side trip” away from the Drauradweg.

What to Expect on the Drauradweg
If you take a look at the map of the Drauradweg, you’ll find the starting point in the South Tyrolean Dolomites. This popular long-distance cycling route begins in Toblach, Italy, where the Drau River originates. The route here is wide and slightly downhill, making it ideal for families. You will then leave South Tyrol towards East Tyrol, enjoying the spectacular backdrop of the Lienz Dolomites. Through the Hochpustertal Valley, you will reach the sun-kissed city of Lienz, known for its Mediterranean flair.
Passing through Oberdrauburg, you will reach the next region of this cycling tour: beautiful Carinthia. Here, you’ll cycle downstream through the expansive Drau Valley, passing numerous exciting highlights. How about exploring the fascinating themed trail through the floodplain landscape in Berg? Or visiting the herb village of Irschen?
Following forested slopes and alpine landscapes, the Drauradweg leads you to Spittal an der Drau. Culture enthusiasts can look forward to the Renaissance-style Porcia Castle, home to famous comedy performances – a perfect opportunity for a well-deserved break on your cycling holiday.
