Fancy unforgettable moments in one of Europe’s last natural paradises? Then off you go to Romania. On this one-week trip, you will experience the UNESCO World Heritage Site Danube delta from its most beautiful side – all the way to kilometre “0”, where the Danube flows into the Black Sea.
Start and finish are in Bucharest, from where you will travel into the Bestepe nature reserve to the Gulf of Musura and as far as Cape Dolosman. Under expert guidance, you will discover the unique fauna and flora where floating reed islands and inland lakes alternate with lagoons, canals and swamps. Panta rhei – everything flows. However, the water is not only your constant companion on this cycle tour in the Danube delta, as you will spend the night in a 4* raft hotel.
The route: Bucharest – Gulf of Musura – Danube delta – Bucharest
The journey through an eventful past and fascinating flora and fauna starts from Bucharest in the direction of Tulcea. Flat, unsurfaced paths, sand and gravel roads lead through the unspoilt UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Danube delta. Enjoy the Romanian hospitality and regional specialities while you are surrounded by the endless expanse of the Black Sea and the lush green landscape of reeds and marshes.
You set off on your bike along the southernmost arm through the Bestepe Hills nature reserve with a magnificent view of the delta. At the Black Sea, kilometre 0 awaits at Sulina, where the Danube reaches its destination and joins the salt water of the sea. Through Musura Bay, you then reach the village of Letea with its reed and clay-built houses and a natural spectacle that is second to none: a tropical jungle on a sandbank. The Celic Dere nunnery, the dreamy monastery of Saon on the banks of the Danube, the nature reserve of Cape Dolosman and the Roman excavations of Argamum are also on the must-see list of this nature & culture cycle tour.
