Cycling holiday in the Danube region of Lower Austria
Full steam ahead on the Danube
Cycling, wine & cultural promenade along the Danube
During a cycling holiday in the Danube region of Lower Austria, you’re not just traveling on any roads, you’re cycling along the promenade. More precisely: on Lower Austria’s wine & cultural promenade right along the Danube. Everything flows – Panta rhei!
The cycle paths in the Danube region of Lower Austria wind along the beautiful blue Danube – the second largest and second longest river in Europe. Along the Danube Cycle Path, you’ll ride proudly for 260 km with your bike from the Nibelungengau in the far west to Marchfeld and Carnuntum in the east. Along this extraordinary river cycling path, there are plenty of hidden treasures, natural & cultural highlights to discover, as well as a few culinary delights along the way.
In addition to numerous culinary & artistic detours, we embark on a wine tasting journey in the UNESCO World Heritage site Wachau – and a spectacular journey through time in the UNESCO World Heritage site Donaulimes. After all, the Limes once marked the border of the Roman Empire and included 4 significant legion camps, numerous forts, and watchtowers.

Highlight tour Danube Cycle Path – Cyclist’s paradise by the water
The Danube Cycle Path is considered one of Austria’s most scenic long-distance cycle routes – whether as a culinary and enjoyable cycling trip or a leisurely e-bike tour. The ten stages in Lower Austria lead directly along the water, passing former towpaths and quiet village streets. Along the way, it’s time to stop, explore, and enjoy!

In addition to historical and scenic highlights such as the typical stone terraces in the wine region of Wachau, blooming apricot orchards, and ancient Roman towns, a visit to the impressive Melk Abbey is also on the itinerary.
Best of energy refueling stations
With the Danube ferry, it’s a breeze to cross to the other side, where sunny spots by the water invite you to relax. And for those in need of an extra energy boost, stop by one of the sunny “energy refueling stations” for pleasure cyclists along the way and riverbanks. For instance, at the small grocer’s in Castle Dürnstein, at the Donaulodge in Ybbs, at Wellen-Spiel in Krems, at Süddeck in Tulln, or at the former Shipmaster’s House.
The tavern culture also shapes the character of the region, just like the Danube – it’s a must to take breaks for culinary delights at the tavern by the wayside, at the Heuriger (wine tavern), or at one of the many gourmet restaurants! And of course, a glass of Grüner Veltliner is a must – as wine production also has a long tradition here.
By the way, there’s plenty of green energy to discover at Austria’s oldest hydroelectric power plant in Ybbs-Persenbeug, but that’s another story…
