A vehicle-free old town, picturesque bay windows and sun-ripened vineyards: welcome to St. Gallen. The tranquil metropolis in East Switzerland lies to the south of Lake Constance and is a true paradise for cyclists. Countless castles and palaces, cosy places to stop for a bite to eat and 30 different grape varieties…there is such a variety of things to explore. So get on your saddle – and off you go!
Wine & Farm
There is a long (wine) tradition behind the history of St. Gallen. Wine was cultivated here by the Romans as early as the 3rd century and was even considered to be a basic foodstuff. Today the abbey district of St. Gallen has over 30 different grape varieties.
That’s why the motto for cyclists in the region is also: enjoy. You can best do that from the saddle, as from here you can enjoy the most beautiful views of the valley floor, the surrounding mountain panorama and the many wine villages. You can travel from one lovely place to the next in an instant. You must sample the sun-ripened wines during your discovery tour.
Tip for wine lovers: regional products are presented and available for tasting Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the popular “Haus des Weins” in Berneck.
