Tauern Cycle Path route: From Krimml via Salzburg to Passau or would you prefer to cycle in the opposite direction?

On the edge of the Hohe Tauern, from which the Tauern Cycle Path takes its name, you cycle along the Salzach via Zell am See, Bischofshofen, Salzburg and Braunau to Passau. For those who want to take a more leisurely approach to this cycle tour, we recommend starting from the west and heading north-east. Due to the natural gradient along the Salzach, the Tauern Cycle Path route is usually slightly downhill, making the progress less strenuous. This also makes the Tauern Cycle Path ideal for family cycle tours. For those looking for a challenge, conquer the Tauern Cycle Path from Passau via Salzburg to Krimml. The majority of the Tauern Cycle Path is tarmac and the long-distance cycle path is unparalleled well signposted in both directions. Nothing stands in the way of conquering this incomparable cycle path!

Waterfalls, ice giants and Mozart legends

The adventure of this long-distance cycle tour starts at the Krimml Waterfalls. A spectacular natural spectacle, when the rushing masses of water from the highest waterfall in Central Europe plunge 380 metres into the depths. The Tauern Cycle Path now passes the Hohe Tauern National Park and runs along the Salzach - against the dream backdrop of the Alps.

Along the way, you can visit the Celtic town of Hallein, the baroque city of Salzburg, the university town of Passau or the National Park Centre in Mittersill, for example - or take a detour to Austria's highest mountain, the 3,798 m high Grossglockner. Or would you prefer relaxation de luxe at the TAUERN SPA Kaprun?

The Tauern Cycle Path: a special kind of pleasure long-distance cycle path

From Kaprun, the route continues at a leisurely pace to the reservoirs of the Pongau Salzach power stations. There are also fantastic highlights along the way on the Tauern Cycle Path, such as the wild and romantic Liechtenstein Gorge and the Eisriesenwelt in Werfen - the largest accessible ice cave in the world. You should also not miss the 900-year-old Hohenwerfen adventure castle with its guided tour and magnificent bird of prey show.

Another highlight of this cycle tour is the Celtic and salt mining town of Hallein. The salt mine with its long slides and underground lake is absolutely worth a visit.

Next stop? Salzburg! Stroll through winding alleyways or up to the Hohensalzburg Fortress. Cultural hotspots such as Hellbrunn Palace, numerous churches and excellent museums also await you here. The cycle tour takes you back via the Salzach Valley, Saalfelden and Lofer to Zell am See - past meadows and pastures, steep rock faces and deep gorges.

Another option on this 310 km cycle tour leads from Salzburg downstream towards Oberndorf with the famous Silent Night Chapel and to Burghausen with the longest castle complex in the world. You reach your destination of Passau via the baroque town of Schärding.
