Today we want to discover the “land of the hammers” and also experience the beautiful natural landscape of the middle Steyr Valley.
A trail steeped in history
The tour starts in Waldneukirchen. From there we take the steep Kirchbühel down to the state road and the small Mayrhof road to Grünburg. Another beautiful view of the river with the picturesque Steinbach on the other side; the clear water rushes past us and gathers by the small power station.
This used to be the centre for knifemakers and other trades and a place where water wheels drove the hammers and grinders. The trail is steeped in a history that dates back to the heyday of the 16th century and through to the end of the Pilsener factories, which are now museums that are worth a visit. Continue along the former rail road alongside the Steyr – past the Haunold Mill above the river and then back to Steinbach. The village is known for its various gentle development concepts – it’s not for nothing that the revived former parsonage is home to a “sustainable forge”!
We cycle further through wonderful hillside forests above Steyr with the knowledge that there can also be ecologically correct solutions for problems … which makes the last ascent to Steinersdorf somewhat easier!
