Salt loop

The Salt Loop of the Upper Bavarian Water Cycle Route is divided into a total of 14 varied stages, which can be cycled as a continuous multi-day tour or individually. The main route consists of several consecutive sections, supplemented by attractive cross-connections and detours.

It starts with the first stage from Munich to Erding, followed by the route to Mühldorf. From there, the route leads via Burghausen to Freilassing, combining historic salt towns with idyllic river landscapes. Further main sections run via Traunstein, Bad Reichenhall and Rosenheim back towards the starting point and complete the large loop.

The route is supplemented by several cross-connections that enable additional variants. These include the connection from Mühldorf to Wasserburg and its continuation to Rosenheim. Another route leads from Steinsee via Grafing and Ebersberg to the reservoir and opens up additional scenic perspectives.

A special detour takes you from Piding via Bad Reichenhall to Berchtesgaden and into the heart of the Alpine mountains. In addition, another route connects the Salzschleife with the so-called Kunstschleife and expands the tour network in a meaningful way.

The extension via Hallein and Salzburg is new: this route connects Bad Reichenhall and Berchtesgaden directly for the first time. Historic salt works, alpine scenery, thermal baths and lakes provide a special variety.

In total, there are 14 varied cycle tours with different lengths and levels of difficulty, which can be flexibly combined and offer an ideal mix of nature, culture and active holidays. Flat, easy to cycle sections alternate with somewhat more challenging stages. Flexible route options allow the tour to be customised, while numerous refreshment stops, beautiful views and places worth seeing ensure an enjoyable cycle tour.
