Between the Salzach, Inn, and Mattig rivers lies the Bavarian-Austrian Explorer’s District – a hidden gem for leisure cyclists. With over 700 kilometers of cycling routes and a brand-new circular tour starting in May 2025, the region combines stunning natural landscapes, cultural highlights, and culinary delights.
The Bavarian-Austrian Explorer’s District is still considered an insider tip for cyclists. Yet, between the Salzach, Inn, and Mattig rivers, there is a vast network of over 700 kilometers of cycling paths to discover. Thanks to the topography, with flat sections and mostly gentle inclines, the region is particularly popular among leisure cyclists. Along the way, unique natural areas await, such as the floodplains along the Salzach, the impressive Salzach breakthrough, or the Lower Inn European Reserve, a paradise for birdwatchers. And for those longing for lakes, the Explorer’s District does not disappoint – eight lakes are located entirely or partially within the region.
From May 2025, a brand-new route will be added: The Explorer’s Cycling Tour, which circles the entire region, showcasing well-known highlights as well as numerous hidden gems. Along the route, traditional snack stations, cider farms, and cozy inns invite visitors to take a break and enjoy the region’s culinary diversity while cycling and discovering.

Leisurely Cycling – Relaxed Enjoyment
In the Explorer’s District, we not only discover fascinating natural and cultural experiences but also indulge in regional cuisine. Numerous dining options invite you to savor the flavors of the region—from rustic snack stations and cider farms to traditional inns and two breweries with their own brewpubs. Adventurers who want to take fresh products home will find them at local farm shops. A particular specialty is the handcrafted bread, available in bakeries, cafés, and many restaurants.

Explorer’s Cycling Tour
The heart and soul of the Explorer’s District is the new Explorer’s Cycling Tour, offering boundless nature enjoyment along with countless cultural and culinary highlights. The 180 kilometer circular route crosses the Salzburger Land, Bavaria, and the Innviertel, reaching into the Mattigtal, and can be completed in 3 to 4 days, depending on pace. You can choose between the lake variant or the panoramic route in the south, as well as a path on either the Austrian or Bavarian side in the west. Thanks to its flexible routing, the tour can be started at various points – train travelers will also find convenient access points along the way.
