Mals – Algund bike tour along the Via Claudia Augusta

    Pleasure tour with medium difficulty
    Duration approx. 4 hours

A varied section of the Via Claudia Augusta

Take the Vinschger Bahn 250 from Algund to the terminus in Mals im Vinschgau at 1,050 metres above sea level. Follow the road to Glurns from the station. This small mediaeval town is definitely worth a visit due to the many beautiful, old and well-maintained buildings. Glurns is the smallest town in South Tyrol. Immediately after leaving Glurns, turn left into the cycle path that runs alongside the Etsch. This is a protected water meadow and is home to threatened species of birds and water animals. In the background, you’ll see the white peaks of the impressive Ortler Range.

After going through the village of Prad, you continue on field trails in an easterly direction. On the outskirts of the Stilfser Joch National Park, you’ll cross protected water meadows several times where the cycle trail is not asphalted. After a while you’ll reach the well-known marble village of Laas. The famous Laas marble is removed from the mountain and taken away in blocks via cable car. It’s a good opportunity to take a small break. Laas is also considered to be the main apricot-growing region in the Vinschgau.

Back on the cycle trail, you continue along the Etsch to Schlanders, Latsch and Kastelbell. The warmer part of the Vinschgau starts in Kastelbell. The milder climate here means that you’ll see the first vineyards and asparagus fields here. You should visit Kastelbell Castle, which is clearly visible from the cycle trail. A few kilometres further along you’ll reach Naturns. Past Plaus and Partschins you cycle left after Töll (part or Partschins) and from there to Algund.

A bicycle tour becomes a pleasure when you combine it with a stop for a bite to eat.
