Cycling and beer
It’s all about monasteries and beer on in this discovery tour in St. Gallen. Yes, you read that correctly! People learned to love the art of brewing back in the early days of monastic life. The abbey district with its Baroque cathedral surprises with a variety of cultural treasures and famous monastery plan from the 9th century, which shows the ideal way to design a monastery district. Fun fact: three breweries were planned as part of the unique layout – so St. Gallen monastery is essentially the origin of Swiss brewing culture.
Monastery & Beer
If we look at the small metropolis of St. Gallen, the cathedral with its two towers clearly stands out in the townscape. The cathedral serves as a cultural symbol and spiritual centre – and from one of the small tower windows, you’ll enjoy the loveliest view of the town, we PROMISE!
A further MUST in the monastery district is the impressive monastery library, also known as the “Seelenapotheke” (pharmacy for the soul). This is because of the 170,000 books and autochthonous collections of manuscripts from the Middle Ages that have found their right place in the impressive library. You must also admire what is possibly the nicest Baroque hall in Switzerland with its vaulted cellar – simply magnificent! Together with the entire district, the monastery library is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
